In the history of Rwandan football, few names are remembered as having made history at the international level. Among these names is Claude Kalisa, a defender who grew up in Muyira and won the hearts of football fans in Rwanda and Belgium, before an injury stopped him at the highest level.

Claude Kalisa was born on June 6, 1977 in Muyira, Rwanda. He started playing football for Rayon Sports between 1996 and 1997, where he quickly showed his extraordinary talent as a central defender. After performing well in Rwanda, he moved to China to play for Yanbian Century, before returning to Rayon Sports and continuing to build a name for himself in Rwandan football.
In 2001, Kalisa got the opportunity to move to Europe, signing for Sint-Truidense VV (STVV) in Belgium. There he played for six years, becoming one of the most successful Rwandan players in European football. At STVV, he played more than 80 games and scored seven goals, proving that he was no ordinary defender. His market value reached 750,000 euros.

At international level, Claude Kalisa became one of the pillars of the national team Amavubi, where he worked with Désiré Mbonabucya to build a strong defense. He played a role in the historic journey that took Rwanda to the 2004 African Cup of Nations, the first time the country had participated in this prestigious tournament.
However, when he had reached the highest level and major European clubs were starting to interest him, misfortune struck him. In an international match for Amavubi, he suffered a serious injury, and later suffered a serious knee problem in a match in the Belgian league. Although he tried to continue playing, the injury did not allow him to return to his previous level.

In 2007, Claude Kalisa made the difficult decision to stop playing football at the age of 29. Although his career ended prematurely, Claude Kalisa’s name remains a symbol of dedication, professionalism and courage in the history of Rwandan football. From Muyira to Belgium, he wrote unforgettable history, and is still considered one of the best defenders Rwanda has ever produced.
