Rwanda National Police says awareness campaigns against domestic violence are beginning to produce positive results, with reported cases of physical assault and harassment dropping by about 50%.
Rwanda Police spokesperson, ACP Rutikanga Boniface, said the decline has been observed following efforts to raise public awareness about domestic violence and encourage communities to prevent and report such cases.
According to ACP Rutikanga, 345 cases of physical assault and harassment were recorded between July 15 and July 31, while 188 cases were reported between August 1 and August 12, 2024.
He said the figures indicate a significant decline in cases, which he attributed to increased awareness among the public about the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of peaceful conflict resolution.
The Police spokesperson encouraged members of the public to continue working with law enforcement agencies and other relevant institutions to prevent violence in families and communities.
He also urged victims and witnesses of domestic violence to report cases to the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken.
The reduction comes as Rwanda continues to strengthen efforts to prevent gender-based violence and domestic violence through public awareness campaigns, community engagement and law enforcement.
Police say continued cooperation from citizens will be crucial in sustaining the progress and further reducing cases of violence in families.
